About this copy

Tales of Suspense #39 (March 1963) introduced Anthony 'Tony' Stark — industrialist, weapons manufacturer, and unlikely hero — who builds a suit of iron armour to escape captivity in a Vietnamese jungle. Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, and Don Heck created a character whose popularity would only grow exponentially over the decades.

The original armour in this issue is grey; the now-iconic red and gold design came in issue #48. This CGC 8.0 VF copy is a spectacular example: the Kirby cover — Iron Man menacing attackers — is vivid and sharp. Pages are cream to off-white.

A foundational Silver Age key available at a fraction of the price of the Spider-Man or Fantastic Four keys — yet equally important to the Marvel Universe.
