About this copy

Incredible Hulk #1 (May 1962) introduced Dr. Bruce Banner, a scientist transformed by gamma radiation into a rampaging grey monster. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby originally printed the Hulk in grey — a production nightmare that led to the iconic green skin from issue #2 onward.

This CGC 6.0 Fine copy presents beautifully. The Steve Ditko-inked Kirby cover — the Hulk carrying Rick Jones with a tank pursuing him — is bold and dynamic. Interior pages are bright with minimal wear.

Only six issues of the original series were published before cancellation in 1963, making #1 even more prized. The grey Hulk wasn't seen again until John Byrne's 1986 run.

Why is Incredible Hulk #181 so valuable?

Incredible Hulk #181 (November 1974) is the first full appearance of Wolverine, the most popular character Marvel created after the 1960s, and it is the most valuable comic of the Bronze Age. Demand comes from Wolverine's decades as an X-Men and film lead; supply in high grade is limited by ordinary 1974 print runs, by the Marvel Value Stamp many readers cut from the issue, and by fifty years of handling.

What are Marvel Value Stamps, and why do they matter for grading?

Marvel Value Stamps were a promotion printed inside most Marvel comics from 1974 to 1976: a numbered stamp of a character on an interior page that readers were encouraged to cut out and paste into a stamp book. Because readers did exactly that, many Bronze Age Marvels from those years are missing a piece of a page. A cut stamp drops the grade sharply or earns a green qualified label, so "Marvel Value Stamp intact" is a meaningful phrase in a listing.

What is the first appearance of Wolverine?

Wolverine's first full appearance is The Incredible Hulk #181, cover-dated November 1974, by Len Wein and Herb Trimpe, with the costume designed by John Romita Sr. He is seen first in a one-panel cameo on the last page of Incredible Hulk #180 (October 1974). Hulk #181 is the most valuable comic of the Bronze Age.

What is the first appearance of the Hulk?

The Hulk first appeared in The Incredible Hulk #1, cover-dated May 1962, created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. In this first issue the Hulk is grey, not green — the colour was changed from issue #2 because the grey printed inconsistently. The issue also introduces Bruce Banner, Rick Jones, General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross and Betty Ross. The original series was cancelled after six issues.
