How much is my comic worth? How to value a comic book
A comic is worth what a copy in the same grade, with the same label and page quality, recently sold for. To value yours: identify the exact issue and printing, grade it honestly (or use the grade on the slab), then look up recent realised sales at that grade from auction houses and marketplaces. Price guides give a starting point, but sales data at your grade is the real answer. Most comics are worth very little; keys and high-grade copies of collectible books are worth checking carefully.

What makes a comic book valuable?
Demand for the issue, scarcity in the grade, and condition. Demand comes from what the issue contains — a first appearance, origin or famous story — and from the character's popularity in films, television and games. Scarcity comes from the era's print run and survival rate. Condition, certified by a grading company, decides where a copy sits within that issue's price range. Age alone does not make a comic valuable.

Why is a 9.8 worth so much more than a 9.6?
Because 9.8 is the practical top of the scale for almost every comic and the grade most collectors of high-grade books insist on. Supply at 9.8 is a small fraction of supply at 9.6 and below, while demand from set-builders and investors concentrates there, so the price step between 9.6 and 9.8 is usually the largest on the whole scale — often two to five times, and far more for scarce Bronze and Silver Age keys.

How to sell graded comics: your options compared
You can sell a graded comic directly to a dealer for immediate payment at a wholesale price, consign it to a dealer or auction house that sells it for a commission, or list it yourself on a marketplace and handle photography, shipping and buyer questions. Dealers pay least but fastest; auctions reach the most buyers for significant keys; self-listing keeps the most margin but the most work and risk. Whichever route, verify the certification number and check recent sales at your grade before you set a price.

What is comic consignment, and how does it work?
Consignment means handing your comics to a dealer or auction house that sells them on your behalf and pays you the sale price minus an agreed commission. You keep ownership until the book sells. It usually returns more than an outright sale to a dealer, because the dealer is not buying the risk, but you wait for the sale and depend on the consignee's reach and honesty. Get the commission, the reserve, the timeline and the insurance in writing before you hand over a book.

How to use realised sales data to price a graded comic
Pull the last several sales of the same issue at the same grade and label from auction archives and sales aggregators, discard obvious outliers, and price at or slightly above the recent median for a quick sale or at the top of the range if you can wait. Sales more than six to twelve months old may be stale for a key whose demand has changed. Always match label colour and note page quality; a restored or signature copy is not a comparable for a blue label.

Are comic books a good investment?
Some comics — major keys in high grade — have risen in value substantially over the past few decades, and record sales in the millions of dollars have made headlines. But comics are illiquid, uninsured by default, expensive to buy and sell (grading fees, commissions, shipping), and their prices depend on fashion, film release schedules and the wider economy. Treat them as collectibles that can appreciate, not as a substitute for a diversified investment, and never pay a price you would not be happy to own the book at.

How do I insure a comic book collection?
Standard home contents insurance usually caps collectibles at a low amount and pays only depreciated value, so a collection of any size needs either a scheduled rider on your home policy listing the significant books, or a dedicated collectibles policy that covers agreed values, transit and shows. Either way you will need an inventory with grades and certification numbers, photographs, and for the most valuable books a written appraisal.
