A pedigree is an original-owner collection of comics that is large, exceptionally well preserved and recognised by name — the Mile High (Edgar Church) collection, the Pacific Coast collection and the Gaines File copies among them. CGC and CBCS print the pedigree name on the label, and pedigree copies sell for a premium over ordinary copies in the same grade because of their provenance and, usually, their page quality.

Collecting
A cameo is a brief appearance — often a single panel, a shadowed figure, or a last-page teaser — while a first full appearance is the issue in which the character plays a real part in the story. The market usually prices the first full appearance higher, but when the cameo is the first time the character is seen at all, both issues become keys. Incredible Hulk #180 (cameo) and #181 (first full appearance) for Wolverine is the classic example.

Collectors divide American comics into eras: the Golden Age (1938 to the mid-1950s), the Silver Age (1956 to about 1970), the Bronze Age (about 1970 to 1985), the Copper Age (about 1985 to 1991) and the Modern Age (1991 to today). The boundaries are conventions rather than official dates, but each era has its own print runs, survival rates, paper and pricing, which is why listings and price guides always state one.

A key issue is a comic that matters for a reason beyond its story: the first appearance of a character, an origin, a first issue, a death, a famous cover, a creator's debut, or the first appearance of a costume or team. Keys are the books that hold and grow value because demand is tied to the character or event rather than to the issue's rarity alone.

Start with a focus — a character, a title run, an era or a creator — set a budget per book, learn the 10-point grading scale before you spend real money, and buy graded copies of anything expensive until you can grade confidently yourself. Buy from sellers who show scans and certification numbers, store what you buy properly, and keep records of what you paid.

A variant cover is an alternative cover printed for the same issue, usually in smaller numbers than the regular cover: retailer incentive variants distributed in ratios such as 1:25 or 1:100, convention exclusives, store exclusives, sketch (black-and-white) covers, and second printings with new covers. Variants are a Modern Age phenomenon and their value depends on the print ratio, the artist and the demand for the issue itself.

From the late 1970s to around 2013, most Marvel and DC comics were printed in two editions: newsstand copies sold on returnable terms through news outlets, and direct editions sold non-returnable to comic shops. They share the same interior; the difference is on the cover, where newsstand copies carry a UPC barcode and direct editions show a logo, a blank box or a different barcode. Newsstand copies from the 1990s onward are scarcer in high grade and often sell at a premium.

A facsimile edition is a modern reprint that reproduces an old comic's cover and interior, including the original advertisements, at the original page count. Marvel and DC have published many since 2019. Facsimiles are clearly marked in the indicia and usually carry a modern barcode and cover price, but from a photo of the cover alone they can look identical to the original, so always check the indicia, price, barcode and paper before buying.

The date printed on a comic's cover was traditionally set two or three months after the issue actually went on sale, so that newsstands would leave it on display longer before returning it as out of date. Incredible Hulk #181 is cover-dated November 1974 but reached readers in August 1974. Collectors and grading companies use the cover date as the reference, so that is the date you will see on labels and on this site.

The Comics Code Authority (CCA) was a self-regulation body set up by American comic publishers in 1954, after a public campaign against crime and horror comics and a U.S. Senate subcommittee hearing that year. Its seal on a cover certified that the contents met the Code's content rules. The Code ended the pre-Code horror era, was loosened in 1971 and 1989, and was abandoned by Marvel in 2001 and by DC and Archie in 2011, after which it ceased to exist.

Marvel Value Stamps were a promotion printed inside most Marvel comics from 1974 to 1976: a numbered stamp of a character on an interior page that readers were encouraged to cut out and paste into a stamp book. Because readers did exactly that, many Bronze Age Marvels from those years are missing a piece of a page. A cut stamp drops the grade sharply or earns a green qualified label, so "Marvel Value Stamp intact" is a meaningful phrase in a listing.
