Collecting EC Comics: Shock SuspenStories, Panic and the pre-Code line

EC Comics, published by William Gaines from 1947 to 1956, produced the most acclaimed horror, crime, science-fiction and satire comics of the Golden Age: Tales from the Crypt, The Vault of Horror, The Haunt of Fear, Shock SuspenStories, Crime SuspenStories, Weird Science, Weird Fantasy, Mad and Panic. The line was destroyed by the 1954 Comics Code; only Mad survived. EC books are collected for their art, and Gaines File copies set the high-grade benchmark.

EC Comics: the publisher the Comics Code destroyed

EC Comics was founded in 1944 by M. C. Gaines as Educational Comics and turned by his son William Gaines, who took over after his father's death in 1947, into Entertaining Comics: the 1950 “New Trend” horror, crime and science-fiction line, and Mad (1952). Its artists — Wally Wood, Jack Davis, Graham Ingels, Al Williamson, Harvey Kurtzman and others — made it the most admired publisher of the Golden Age. The 1954 Comics Code made its horror and crime titles unpublishable, and by 1956 only Mad, converted to a magazine, remained.

    What is a variant cover?

A variant cover is an alternative cover printed for the same issue, usually in smaller numbers than the regular cover: retailer incentive variants distributed in ratios such as 1:25 or 1:100, convention exclusives, store exclusives, sketch (black-and-white) covers, and second printings with new covers. Variants are a Modern Age phenomenon and their value depends on the print ratio, the artist and the demand for the issue itself.

Batman Adventures #12 explained: Harley Quinn's first comic appearance

The Batman Adventures #12 (September 1993) is Harley Quinn's first appearance in comics, a year after her television debut in Batman: The Animated Series. It is the most valuable comic of the 1990s after New Mutants #98 and a standard Modern Age key. Because it was printed in large numbers, the value sits almost entirely in 9.8 copies, newsstand copies and the scarcer second printing.
