Avengers #1 (September 1963) united Marvel's biggest characters — Thor, Iron Man, the Hulk, Ant-Man, and the Wasp — into a team book that would become one of the most successful franchises in entertainment history. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby created a concept simple enough to write on a napkin, yet rich enough to sustain 60+ years of stories.
