What is a CGC graded comic?

Short answerA CGC graded comic is a comic book that Certified Guaranty Company (CGC) has examined, assigned a numeric grade from 0.5 to 10.0, and sealed in a tamper-evident plastic holder with a label that records the grade, the page quality and any restoration. The holder and label let a buyer trust the condition without opening the book.
What CGC actually does
CGC is a third-party grading company founded in 2000 and based in Sarasota, Florida. It does not buy or sell comics; it examines them. When a book arrives, graders check that it is complete and authentic, look for restoration, assess every defect, and settle on a grade using the industry's 10-point scale. The book is then encapsulated in a hard plastic case (collectors call it a slab) with the label at the top.
Because CGC is independent of the seller, the grade removes the two biggest arguments in a sale: what condition the book is really in, and whether it has been restored. That is why graded copies trade at a premium over identical raw copies and why almost every high-value comic sale today involves a graded book.
Reading the label
The label carries everything you need to evaluate a slab before you buy:
- The grade — a number such as 9.8, 8.0 or 3.5. See how comics are graded for what each number means.
- The label colour — blue for an unrestored book, yellow for a witnessed signature, purple for restoration, green for a qualified grade. Label colours explained.
- Page quality — white, off-white, cream, and so on. Page quality matters more than most new collectors expect.
- Key notes — first appearances and other reasons the issue matters, printed on the label.
- The certification number — a unique number you can verify on CGC's website.
What the holder guarantees
The holder is tamper-evident: once it has been cracked open, it cannot be resealed without visible damage. Inside, the book sits in an inner well; CGC also inserts MicroChamber paper in older books to slow down the chemical ageing of the paper.
A slab does not stop time. Paper still ages, and a badly stored slab can still be damaged by heat, humidity or light. What the slab does is freeze the assessment: the grade on the label was true on the day it was graded, and the book has not been touched since.
Why collectors use it
- Liquidity. Graded keys sell faster and to a wider audience because the buyer does not need to inspect the book in person.
- Price transparency. Sales are recorded by grade, so you can compare like with like — the CGC census shows how many copies exist at each grade.
- Protection. The holder guards against handling damage.

- Grading does not change the book, but it removes uncertainty. For key issues and high-grade copies, a graded book usually sells for more than the same book raw because buyers can trust the condition and check the certification. For common, low-value books the grading fee can exceed the difference.
- Can I open a CGC slab?
- Yes, but the holder is destroyed in the process and the book becomes raw again. Collectors crack slabs to press a book and resubmit it, or to read it. The certification is void once the case is opened.
